Overview

Why Outdoor Cushions Fail Faster in Florida

Outdoor cushions have a hard life in Florida: humid air, afternoon rain and full sun, every day. Apogee Upholstery rebuilds outdoor and patio cushions at our shop in Venice, FL for homeowners, condo associations and clubhouses from Nokomis to Englewood, North Port, Port Charlotte and Sarasota.

We replace flattened foam with quick-dry reticulated foam that drains instead of holding water, sew new covers in solution-dyed acrylics such as Sunbrella, and template curved and built-in seating on site so the cushions follow the stonework. We also build fitted covers that keep the new cushions out of the weather.

  • Humidity flattens open-cell foam

Open-cell foam soaks up humidity and rain, loses its loft and never fully dries. Reticulated foam lets water run straight through.

  • Mildew starts inside

Wet foam under a tight cover is where black spots begin. Quick-dry foam, mesh venting and solution-dyed fabric starve mildew of the damp it needs.

  • Sun fades printed fabric

Printed polyester fades on the sunny side first and tears once the fibers weaken. Solution-dyed acrylic is colored through the fiber and holds up in direct sun.

  • Stock sizes do not fit built-ins

Curved fire pit benches, banquettes and lanai built-ins are not catalog shapes. We template them on site so every section follows the stone.

  • Sections that lift off for cleaning and storms
  • Matching back cushions, bolsters and pillows

Outdoor Furniture Covers

A fitted cover is the simplest way to make new cushions last. We build covers for fire pit seating, dining sets, loungers and sectionals in boat-cover fabrics, with vents and tie-downs.

  • Fire pit, dining set, lounge and sectional covers
  • Vents to stop condensation underneath
  • Tie-downs and buckles for wind

Pillows, Bolsters & Sling Replacement

Throw pillows and bolsters finish a lanai, and worn sling fabric sidelines a good chair. We sew pillows to match and replace sling seats and backs in outdoor mesh.

  • Sling chair and chaise fabric replacement
  • Welting, flange and contrast options

How it works

Our Process

  1. 1

    Photos or a site visit

Send photos and rough measurements through the contact page, or bring the cushions to the shop. For curved and built-in seating, we come out and template on site.

  2. 2

    Foam and fabric

You pick fabric from Sunbrella-type samples in the shop. We specify quick-dry foam for anything that gets wet and high-density foam for covered lanais.

  3. 3

    Patterns and cutting

Covers are patterned from your originals or our templates, with zippers, venting and ties where the furniture needs them.

  4. 4

    Sewing

Seams are sewn in UV-resistant thread, corners boxed and welted where the original had it, and every cover is checked on its foam.

  5. 5

    Fitting and covers

Cushions go back on the furniture, built-in sections are set in place and any fitted covers are tried on so they tie down right.

FAQ

Outdoor & Patio Cushions FAQ

Can you replace just the foam in my outdoor cushions?

Yes, if the covers are still sound. Flat, heavy or musty cushions usually have waterlogged foam under fabric that still looks fine. We open the cover, fit quick-dry reticulated foam cut to the original profile and reassemble it. If the fabric has faded or the seams are weak, we will say so.

What is the best fabric for outdoor cushions in Florida?

Solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella is what we recommend for most lanai, pool and fire pit cushions. The color runs through the fiber, so it resists fading, and it dries quickly and resists mildew. Printed polyester costs less but fades and weakens in Gulf Coast sun.

How do you keep pool cushions from growing mildew?

Quick-dry reticulated foam drains instead of holding water, mesh venting lets the cushion breathe, and solution-dyed acrylic does not feed mildew the way cotton-backed fabric does. Standing cushions on edge after heavy rain helps, and a fitted cover keeps them dry between uses.

Can you make cushions for a curved fire pit or built-in bench?

Yes. Curved and built-in seating is some of our most common outdoor work. We template the stone or frame on site, number each section and build cushions that follow the curve and lift off for cleaning or a storm. Matching backs, bolsters and a fitted cover can be built at the same time.

Do you work with HOAs, condo associations and clubhouses?

We do. Pool deck loungers, clubhouse seating and common lanai furniture are rebuilt in matched sets in fabric and foam chosen for heavy use. We schedule in stages so the pool deck stays open, and can quote fitted covers to protect the new cushions.

Where do I bring my cushions?

To our shop at 420 E Venice Ave in Venice, FL, open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Most cushions fit in a car. For built-in seating or a large community set, we come out to measure across Venice, Nokomis, Englewood, North Port, Port Charlotte and Sarasota.
