Overview

Repair or Reupholster? How We Decide

Not every boat seat needs a full reupholstery. A split seam on the helm bench, one torn panel on a bolster, a cushion that has gone flat or a cracked corner on a bow pad can usually be repaired for a fraction of a full interior, and usually in days rather than weeks. Apogee Upholstery repairs boat seats and cushions at our shop in Venice, FL for owners across Sarasota and Charlotte counties.

We tell you honestly which repairs are worth doing. If the vinyl has gone brittle everywhere, a patch will fail at the next seam and we will say so. If the damage is local and the rest of the seat is sound, a repair is the smart money. Either way, you get a clear quote before any work starts.

  • Local damage, sound vinyl

A single tear, a popped seam, a chewed corner or one sun-rotted panel on an otherwise supple seat: repair.

  • Flat but intact

If the cover is fine but the seat has collapsed, new foam under the existing cover brings the seat back without new vinyl.

  • Brittle everywhere

If the vinyl cracks when you fold it, repairs will chase failures from seam to seam. That seat needs a new cover.

  • Hardware and bases

Broken hinges, rusted snaps and soft base boards are repairs on their own, and often the reason a seat looks worse than it is.

What we do

Boat Seat & Cushion Repairs We Do

Seam & Stitching Repair

The seam is usually the first failure point on marine upholstery, because standard thread rots long before the vinyl does. We open the seam, re-sew it with UV-resistant thread and reinforce the stress points.

  • Re-stitching in UV-rated bonded or PTFE thread
  • Reinforced corners and stress points
  • Same-color thread matched to the original

Single Panel Replacement

When one panel is torn or sun-rotted, we replace that panel with matching marine vinyl rather than patching over it. A sewn-in panel looks right and lasts; a glued patch does not.

  • Panel patterned from the original
  • Color and grain matched as closely as the material allows
  • Original piping and welting kept

Foam Replacement in One Cushion

A seat that has gone flat or lumpy usually has waterlogged foam. We open the cushion, replace the foam with closed-cell marine foam cut to the original profile and reassemble the existing cover.

  • Closed-cell foam that does not hold water
  • Profile restored to the original shape
  • Existing cover reused when it is still sound

Cushion Re-Cover

Bow pads, cockpit cushions and jump seats are often cheaper to re-cover than to repair. We make a new cover for the single cushion and match it to the rest of the boat.

  • One cushion at a time
  • Matched to existing colors
  • New foam if the old is wet

Snaps, Hinges, Zippers & Base Boards

Rusted snaps, broken hinges, seized zippers and soft plywood bases make good upholstery look bad. We replace hardware with stainless and rebuild bases in marine plywood or composite.

  • Stainless snaps and hinges
  • Marine zippers and sliders
  • Rot-proof base boards

Jet Ski & PWC Seat Repair

Jet ski seats split along the seams and soak up water through the foam. We re-stitch, replace panels or re-cover the seat and replace the foam when it is waterlogged.

  • Seam repair and panel replacement
  • Full re-cover in grippy marine vinyl
  • Foam replacement for waterlogged seats

UV-resistant thread
Bonded polyester or PTFE thread so the repaired seam outlasts the surrounding ones.
Closed-cell marine foam
For any cushion opened during the repair, so it does not go flat or soak up water again.
Stainless hardware
Snaps, hinges, staples and zipper sliders that do not rust.
How it works

Our Process

  1. 1

    Send photos

Clear photos of the damage and the whole seat through the contact page are usually enough for us to say repair or re-cover and give a quote.

  2. 2

    Honest assessment

We check the vinyl, foam, base and hardware and tell you what is worth repairing and what is not.

  3. 3

    Match the material

We match the vinyl color and grain from our samples; exact matches are not always possible on faded vinyl, and we will show you the closest option.

  4. 4

    Repair and return

Most single-seat repairs are done within days once materials are in. Bring the seat, or the boat, and pick it up finished.

FAQ

Boat Seat Repair FAQ

Can you repair just one torn boat seat?

Yes. Single-seat and single-panel repairs are a large part of what we do. Send photos of the damage and the whole seat and we will quote a repair or, if the vinyl is brittle, a re-cover of that one seat.

Can a tear in marine vinyl be patched?

A glued patch is a temporary fix at best and usually fails in Florida sun within a season. We replace the damaged panel with a sewn-in piece of matching vinyl, which looks right and lasts as long as the rest of the seat.

Will the repaired panel match my seats?

We match color and grain from a wide range of marine vinyl. On older, faded seats an exact match is not always possible; we show you the closest option before we cut.

My seat is not torn, just flat. Can you fix that?

Yes. A flat seat with a sound cover usually needs new foam. We open the cushion, replace the foam with closed-cell marine foam cut to the original profile and reassemble your cover.

How long does a boat seat repair take?

Most single-seat repairs are finished within a few days of materials arriving. Bring the seat alone if it unbolts easily, or the whole boat on its trailer.

Do you repair jet ski seats?

Yes. We re-stitch seams, replace panels and re-cover jet ski and PWC seats, and replace waterlogged foam.
