Custom Curved Outdoor Cushions and Cover for a Poolside Fire Pit
Case study: custom curved outdoor cushions and a round cover for a stone fire pit bench on a waterfront pool deck near Venice, FL, built for sun, salt and rain.

Built-in outdoor seating looks wonderful and is a headache to cushion. Nothing off the shelf fits a curve, and the cushions that came with this kind of seating are usually the first thing to fail. This project at a waterfront home near Venice, FL is a good example of both problems and of how we solve them.
The project
The homeowners had a curved stone bench wrapping around a fire pit set directly into the pool deck. It is the sort of spot you want to use every evening, and the existing cushions were making that hard. They had gone flat, lost their shape and no longer sat properly on the curve. The owners wanted seating that matched the quality of the stonework and could survive a pool deck in Florida.
We designed, built and installed a full set of custom curved seat and back cushions, and then built a round fitted cover so the whole seating area can be protected when it is not in use.

Why the old cushions failed
The original cushions had the problems we see on almost every pool deck in Southwest Florida. The foam had compressed and stopped recovering, so the seats were thin and uneven. Water from the pool and from summer storms had been soaking into the foam, which adds weight, crushes the cells and starts mildew that no cleaning will remove. Direct sun had been working on the fabric and the thread every afternoon.
None of that is a reflection on the homeowners. It is what happens when cushions built with ordinary foam and fabric are asked to live outdoors by a pool. Fixing it properly means patterning the seating correctly and then using materials that were designed for exactly this environment, which is how we approached the rebuild.
Patterning a curved bench
A curved cushion only looks right if it follows the bench exactly, so we started on site rather than in the shop. We measured the inner and outer radius of the bench, the seat depth and height, and the back angle, then laid pattern tape directly on the stone to capture the true shape of each section. Stone benches are rarely perfectly symmetrical, and the pattern picks up those small differences so each cushion lands in the right place.
The set was divided into sections that are easy to lift off, which matters for cleaning, for hurricane season and for the owners' plan to store the cushions during the off-season. Each section was patterned so the seams fall at the breaks in the bench rather than in the middle of a seat.

Materials chosen for a pool deck
Outdoor seating in Florida takes a beating: sun, humidity, salt air from the water, pool splash and daily rain through the summer. Everything in this set was chosen for that environment.
- Quick-dry foam that drains and dries rather than soaking up water and growing mildew
- A high-performance outdoor marine-grade fabric that is UV-resistant and mold- and mildew-resistant, the same class of material we use on boats
- UV-resistant thread, because seams are where outdoor cushions fail first
- A fabric color chosen to pick up the natural tones of the water and the stone, so the cushions look like part of the design rather than an afterthought
The combination gives cushions that are comfortable to sit on, dry out quickly after a storm, and keep their color through years of direct sun.
The round cover
Cushions that live by a fire pit and a pool get wet from both directions, so we built a round custom cover that goes over the entire seating area. It keeps rain and leaves out of the cushions and the pit, blocks the sun when the space is not in use, and makes the daily routine simple: pull the cover off in the evening, put it back when the fire is out. The cover was built in tan to sit quietly against the stone.

What the owners should know
A set like this will last a long time with a little care. Lift the cushions on edge after heavy rain so any water drains out the bottom. Rinse off pool chemicals and salt spray with fresh water. Use the cover whenever the seating is not in use, and bring the cushions inside during the off-season or if a storm is coming. The quick-dry foam and marine fabric do most of the work, but a cover and a dry storage spot add years.
If your current outdoor cushions have gone flat, our guide to why outdoor cushions go flat explains what is happening inside them and what we do about it.
Built-in seating of all shapes
Curved fire pit benches, straight pool deck benches, outdoor kitchen banquettes and dock seating all have the same problem: nothing standard fits, and standard materials do not last. We build cushions for all of them using the same patterning and the same marine materials we use for boat upholstery, and we can add a fitted cover in the same way we build custom marine covers. Our shop at 420 E Venice Ave serves homeowners across Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, Sarasota, Englewood and the Gulf Coast.
